A Little More Details….
Sorry for not giving a bunch of details the other day about this new adventure I’m going on. Was in a rush just to get the announcement up.
Ok, so for my family and friends let me give you a little bit of information about podcasting, what it is, and where this all fits together.
Podcasting: Think of it as TiVo for Internet Content. Someone records something. There are cooking shows, talk radio shows, movie reviews, and music shows like mine. People record them on their computer and then upload it to a website. People can come to the site and click on a link like this and listen to it. It’s just an MP3 file which if you have an even semi new computer you can listen to.
But, where podcasting is a little differently is that there is software out there that you can run on your computer that if you put in a special “feed” address of a website (look for an orange XML or RSS button on a site) you can subscribe to a show and anytime a new one is posted it’ll download to your computer. Better yet if you have an MP3 player you can have it synch up to that whenever you plug it in as well.
It’s a sort of weird concept to grasp your heads around, but there are plenty of people out there smarter then me trying to make it easier for everyone to grasp.
So, what is this opportunity I’m now part of? The company is Podshow. There are a lot of things they will be doing including making it so that anyone can podcast or find podcasts. They will also be hooking up advertisers with people who want to run ads during their podcast.
But, what I’m doing besides being signed on a just a podcaster is I’m going to be helping them build a huge music library of independent music. This is what gets me most excited about.
We can’t divulge all the details, but at it’s basic any band will be able to submit their music and information to this library. Podcasters will be able to get access to this music to play on their shows. Also, by being in this database it will expose a whole other world of people to the music as well. So a band who wants to get more exposure can do so simply by adding their name and a couple of tunes to the library. That’s it in a very high level/ I can’t say more yet way.
I’m going to help shape what the directory looks like and how it functions. I’m also responsible to go out and get the word out to the bands out there on the Internet and beyond.
This is very cool because I’ve always been into promoting the small time bands that should be. My buddy Dan when I told him about this made my day when he said “dude, you were meant to do this. You use to do this on our little radio show back at Bentley.” He’s right and it made me feel good to hear him say that.
Podcasting is very new. Got it’s big start just last August so we are in our infancy. I’m one of the founding members of the Association of Music Podcasting (AMP) which really got the ball rolling for me and music podcasting. So if your looking for some other music podcasts out there (they come in every shape and flavor *grin*) that would be a great place to start. If you want a recommendation based on your musical tastes just let me know and I’ll point you in the right direction.
As the Podshow vision becomes more visible on the web I’ll let ya know.
