Don’t Believe the Hype
My column from this week’s BostonNOW Newspaper talking about the iPhone and hype in general.
Related a friend just sent me to iPhatigue which sort of sums it all up.

I think the word hype, though, is being a bit over used and somewhat in the wrong context. I don’t think the iPhone is hyped, I think it is over talked about by fans of the device. My reasoning is this: I consider hype to be a company initiating and continuing a large amount of company created “discussion” about an item or issue, thus making it a sensational news item.
I don’t think Apple did this. Or if they did, they were much more clever about it than Hollywood blockbuster marketing departments. Steve Jobs presented it in January. Not that much else was said of it as a product itself except when major updates were made concerning battery life (and of course the trademark issue, but that was trademark, not item) up until the commercials began running and Jobs talked about it again at WWDC. The hype that everyone is tired of is user generated.
But then again, that’s my opinion. And yes, I want an iPhone.
