I just thought it was so cool my 8yr old was using Linux. But we started having problems with it and I put her back on Windows XP. The real problem is that she likes using my Macbook much better. The public school here as a laptop program where kids can get a Macbook (at a discount from Apple) and starting in 3rd grade they use them for projects. They even learn how to put together PowerPoint or Keynote presentations. Crazy. Virginia goes to private school, so no laptop for her, yet. I'm excited to see what's coming. On the thinkpad, have you considered making it a linux machine? Ubuntu is really user friendly, there's some great learnig software available, and you won't have to worry about viruses or spyware.
