Alive in Baghdad Reporter Killed

I know the team behind Alive in Baghdad pretty well so when I read this news I was speechless.

These guys are DOING what new media is suppose to be about. Sharing stories and giving insight into the things that mainstream media is overlooking. Giving a voice to the stories that need to be shared.
To have one of their reporters killed is just….well I don’t know. I’m beyond words right now.  I’ve been off line most of the day and just saw the news on someone else’s blog and wanted to share.

I just donated by sending money via PayPal to smallworldnews (at) gmail.com with “For Ali” in the subject line to help the family pay for his funeral and anything else. I strongly encourage you to do the same if you can.

  • Thanks so much for the link - I went straight to PayPal.
  • CC I didn't know you were interested in this side of hard core journalism. A dangerous profession slipping from view behind "video game" warfare.

Since you are, I must share this website with you and your readers. http://www.frontlineclub.com/ The Frontline Club is based in London and is a foundation for independent journalists. They also have a site on ning by invitation only to journalists or former journalists. When you read the stories of the writers, reporters, and visual journalists, especially from the comforts of your home, you realize two things, 1) how dangerous parts of the world are, and 2) how much most of us have to be thankful.

All the best CC, peace to you, your family, and those of the Alive in Baghdad crew.

  • My heart's in my stomach at this news.

Holy cow - that's absolutely revolting.

It's almost incomprehensible that there is this kind of destruction in a world where I sit so sheltered. This really drives it home. My heart goes out to everyone at Alive in Baghdad and Ali's family.

Thank you for blogging about this! The least we can do is to donate. My thoughts are with all the persons in Iraq right now... It is one thing to hear about those killings in the media, but it is totally different to really think about what it means, when something like that happens.
  • Thank you for posting about this. I found out at Twitter via Jim Long who has some a seesmic post. Out of all the horrific news throughout this war, this particular murder is incredibly disturbing.

I'm not surprised you knew the Baghdad people. It can be a rather small world. Their commitment is inspiring.
