Kaneva Is Blowing It

posted on March 2, 2007

No sooner do I blog about people getting it in new media that I’m faced with someone NOT getting it.

Kaneva is  very interesting mesh between 2-D social networking and 3D viritual worlds. It’s brand new and I was psyched to try it out.

Today and I got an invitation to try out the virtual world aspect and jumped at it. Unlike many people though I read NDA’s before signing them and there were two points in their that instantly made me quit and forget about the system all together.

- You must not represent or be employed by any company, publisher or distributor engaged in developing, publishing or distributing electronic video games and/or virtual worlds.

- You may not publicly discuss your status as a member of the World of Kaneva testing program.

The first one instantly cancels me out because of the work I do in Second Life with crayon.

The second one is just stupid. It’s a SOCIAL network and thus your going to be talking to the people in world and on their site about being part of the program. If it’s on the web. It’s public. HELLO!!!

I really hope the people at Kaneva are watching for conversations about them on the web and can react to this. They have SO much potential, but they are cutting off the community that wants to help make them a success.

That’s truly silly. Talk about a web 1.0 mindset. Business 1.0 . How utterly silly of theme. Please don’t the word that you’re checking out our stuff. Meanwhile, look at that Joost beta tester badge. Silly humans.

    Good luck with that, Kaneva.

Ive been on both Second Life and Kaneva, wheres Kaneva takes the advantage by its simplicity, one of the reasons why Chriss Klaus stayed away from Second Life, which has become so vast it no longer becomes an Online interacting Gaming Platform but is becoming more and more an Online Business Venture.
Chriss Klaus has attempted to keep Kaneva more as an Online Interacting Gaming platform focusing more on the Community as a whole. Although Kaneva is still in Beta stage it does have its limitations, it can only address an english speaking community, and the Avatars are very limited looking more in the way of virtual clones.
It does still only manages to attract a vast majority of Community Members between the ages of 12 to 20, its downfall being the ability for people to open a free account with no verification of age. It still needs strict controlling with the emphasis on the much younger members.
On the whole it is a step forward from the days of Internet Chat Rooms but a lot more still needs to be be done in the interests of younger audiences.
