Morning Surf Multitasking

I’ve always had the concept of a Morning Surf in my life. This is when I first turn on the computer and go through the same set of actions. This has evolved over time and now of course includes looking through my RSS feeds, checking e-mail and scanning a handful of sites and social networks. I do this over my morning coffee and today a breakfast bar.

PhotoGamer.com #2- Eyes ClosedWhat I miss is in my old office I had a TV and thus would have the Today Show or CNN on in the background. I can easily listen to multiple conversations so I don’t need to actually watch the news but can still consume it by just listening. Since we moved I don’t have this set up in my office so a couple times a week I’ll spend the first few hours of my work day in the living room. Today was one of those days and I always feel better when I do this.

I really needed to do this today because I wanted to hear the latest on Iowa. While I don’t talk about it a whole lot, I’m very into politics and this year is going to be an interesting one. These next couple of weeks are going to be huge in the political space and I’m psyched some people I consider good friends just launched a new site for The Talk Radio News Service. They are leveraging lots of new media tools instead of filtering everything through a big old school news filter. I’m hoping to hook up with them when they are in New Hampshire next week. Kudos to the whole team behind making this happen.

If you are curious, my vote is currently going to Obama with Edwards being a very close second. 2008 is going to be a hell of an interesting year if for nothing else then the whole election process. I’m really hoping to be celebrating in November rather then the sucker punch feeling I had a few years ago.

Your ideal morning routine sounds very similar to mine. There’s something grounding about spending the first hour or so reconnecting and catching up with whatever the world was up do during your hours of sleep. Sets me up right and armed for whatever the day decides to throw at me.

Should I add talkradionews twitter account to my twitterdirectory.net? Do you know whether they will do more regular tweeting from now on?

  5. Dan Patterson says:

Yep! We’re totally going to be Twittering - off to New Hampshire RIGHT now, but starting this weekend, we shall be tweeting!

    Thanks!

There’s always the NPR 10-minute morning news summary, or you could just subscribe to a few NPR podcasts for longer background news. They also have an hourly 5-minute summary every hour on the hour.

If you sit in front of a computer all day, that’s probably your best bet for good (and commercial/hype/fear-free) news in my opinion.

If you’re really coming up this way, stop by Seabrook on your way back home. Jamie and I would love to see you.

Hmph. Just tried to post a comment and something went wonky. Apologies if it double posts, but if you’re heading up this way, Jamie and I would love to see you. Give us a call if you can fit us into our busy schedule.

CC - I like the Morning Surf phrase. Makes me feel Californian although I’m in South Dakota. This morning I jumped out of bed thinking I was missing a presentation I was involved with only to find once at work that I misread my schedule. So here I sit in the meeting room, calm as can be, and I’m doing my Morning Surf and finding it so peaceful. Especially when you’re not surrounded by familiar items that beg you to work on them. I may have to Surf like this more often!
