Dylan’s First Dinner
A couple of nights ago Dylan declared that he wrote something on the calendar that I had to see. So I looked at it and saw “Dylan making dinner” written in his handwriting. Turns out he got the urge to make dinner and wanted to make it on his own with only help from me getting the pots and pans down.
He wrote me out a shopping list and everything. Here is a picture of the chef and his finished product.

Yup, he made lasagna because it was one of the recipes in a cook book we got the kids recently. I had never used the no boil lasagna noodles before, but they certainly made it easier.
He did great with everything. I kept a close eye on him so he didn’t burn himself when cooking the meat and laying everything out in the pan. I taught him how with cooking you don’t have to follow things exactly as they say. He didn’t quite understand (I’m telling you this kid is going to be an engineer someday), but trusted in me to do it right.
Everyone loved it and as I tucked him in last night he grinned and said, “Daddy some time I want to make BLD. Do you know what that is?”
I didn’t know so he laughed and told me, “Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. I want to make them all in one day sometime.”
How can I argue with that? Glad to be raising kids who are both creative and like to cook. Two skills that will help them in life.

That is so cool! And, it looks tasty. Maybe he needs a personalized chef hat for his next birthday?

This is great. There is a science of cooking and once you understand that, you can veer from the recipes.
Have Dylan watch this behind the scenes at America’s Test Kitchen:

Congratulations Dylan! Move over CC, it’s time for Dylan to start his own cooking site - or be a guest blogger on a learning how to cook site…hmmmm….

How old is Dylan, 9? 10? I am almost 20 years older than him and wouldn’t have the first idea how to make lasagne. How embarassing.
What a great kid.

BLD! He must be a Rachael Ray fan! You are one lucky set of parents to have Dylan not only interested in eating different foods, but *cooking* them!

Thanks for all the great feedback. It is pretty cool to have a just turned 9 year old making you dinner! That is for sure. I can’t complain.
And the idea of a guest host on Start Cooking sure did bring a smile to my face Kathy. Should I have his agent call you? *laugh*
