Creative Funk

I’m full of creative energy, but no time to let it out and put it to use. It was on my mind yesterday quite a bit and I recorded a quick One Guy’s Thoughts about it as I waited for my Mac to reboot after an update. Click on the photo to watch.

Creative Funk

I took the photo today for this blog post, but the feeling is still there. Got talking a bit with Clarence about it. We are determined to fix it together. Can’t let creative juices go to waste right? *grin*

    Hey CC,

I know the feeling! It’s easy to let the day-to-day grind take you away from the parts of your work you really love. When you’re in business it’s especially hard to set aside time to exercise your creativity. But it’s a must.

BTW: I’m a big fan of the podcast. :)

I go back-n-forth between ‘creative ideas and no time’ and ‘some time but mentally burnt’ … interested to hear about your fix …

You’re touching on an important point in this video. It is important to remember to find time to work on your business not just in your business. Speaking from experience, that is difficult to do in bootstrap startup mode, but especially in a consulting business like yours.

But do yourself a favor and force yourself to spend time on things like marketing the company, prospecting for sales, building partnerships, strategic planning for your company not just your clients, brainstorming ideas, and more. It may mean you need to sub out some work or — scary though it seems — hire some real employees. Reducing your margin somewhat now can often lead to greater long-term rewards.

Finally, remember that if your company revenue is based mostly on project revenue or time-limited contracts, the most important time to be working on growing the company is when you are the busiest. If you aren’t prospecting when you are slammed with work, you will find a time comes when the pipeline dries up — and it takes real time to reprime the pump.

Of course, much of this advice falls in the category of do as I say not as I do. But I try my hardest with all of my businesses to follow this advice. When I do, it serves me well.

I’m with you man. Lots of ideas and no time to create it. Just have to carve the time somewhere. And I love “stuck in customs”!

Chip, some great advice indeed. Thank you for sharing and hopefully we’ll get together soon.

Don’t get me wrong guys, things are going great. I doodled a bit while the reboot was going on and it was a quick fix. I’m sure anyone who likes doing creative things faces this from time to time.

Never enough time in the day to do everything any of us want. Just the nature of the beast as they say.
