Google Wave First Impressions

I was one of the random few that got a Google Wave invite the other day and of course jumped right in and starting playing around to see what it was and how it might fit into my life.

google_wave_logoThe first thought I had was that it was more of a ripple then a wave. But, I also know that this is what BETA testing is about. Seeing beyond what is there now and what it could be. Mitch Joel wrote a great post about everyone writing it off to quickly.

As someone who prides himself on playing with new technology and thinking about the big picture always I wanted to make sure that I really gave it a fair shake before ripping it to shreds. To do this I started using this for a mini project that I’m working on with a friend who I also noticed was in Wave (Google instantly shows you which of your contacts are there in real time).

At the moment it is a mashed up glorified IM, e-mail, collaboration tool. I can see them taking this and allowing organizations to install it locally and integrate directly into Google Apps to be an in house collaboration tool to take on Sharepoint and all the others. It isn’t quite ready to replace them or be a replacement for Basecamp, but it could certainly go in that direction quickly. There is a lot of potential there.

This video is the most straight forward explanation I’ve seen for what it is at the moment. But, trust me that it is going to be more as it begins to integrate with the full suite of other Google tools and becomes available on phones and beyond the browser.

This may not be a tsunami of “oh shit this is cool!” but riding waves can be fun. Grab a surfboard and try it out for a while before you give up on it.

  • RT @MagicSauceMedia: Only a few people got the Google Wave invite, read what Beta testers think: http://bit.ly/azYDf
  • What is Google Wave? http://tinyurl.com/y8rstbo
  • As someone who needs to integrate more contacts than ever before, across all the social media outlets and depositories, I am looking forward to the year I get my Wave invitation. Great post CC.
  • I like your thoughts. they seem to match up with my own.. I have only had my hands on google wave thru a friends account. It was pretty much what you said. It is the first step or many to becoming a powerful real time tool.
  • I’m most excited about the “Bloggy”. (Jump to 3min 12sec into the video embedded above). As a podcaster / blogger / online community builder, I’m most interested in the ability for me to embed waves in various sites that I manage.

At this time, I sometimes post the same content in many different venues. For example, I will post an episode of Podcast Answer Man podcast episodes here on this site, the gspn.tv main site and the premium, plus member only site that I manage for gspn.tv. Each post on each site has it’s own comments section, none of them connected to each other.

I can envision the ability to use something like this bloggy feature to embed into each of these posts and turning off the individual comments sections. So basically, the google wave for comments would be right inside my show notes page. This way, if you are a gspn.tv plus member and viewing the show notes on that page… let’s say you add a comment there. Your comment will also show up on the main gspn.tv site as well as on this Podcast Answer Man site. Actually, I could even try to add it to the gspn.tv Community Forum somehow.

This is just the beginning of what I think Google Wave will be able to do for me as a Podcaster. It may take a while for this one to catch on. But I do expect that we are “riding the wave” of the “next big thing.”
  • I am also one of the ones who has a Google Wave invite. I invited a few others, but none of them have received their referrals. So, right now, I do not have anyone to Wave at.

BTW, my two daughters and I created a new blog called Blogging the Wave. We will take different prospectives on our experiences with Google Wave, (1) a college junior, (2) a recent PhD graduate and (3) a software professional.
