Passionate Post

posted on August 13, 2009

If you don’t really know me then you might not know that I’ve had to fight for just about everything in my life. My family did not have a lot, but we had a ton of love, discipline and all around great upbringing, but nothing was ever handed to me.

I had to write a post this morning called Raising Gatejumpers on Digital Dads to talk about how I’m passing this along to my kids.

I’ve never been as passionate about this as I am now. It is amazing how a simple conversation can focus your thoughts so quickly. That happened to me. Look out!

Hey CC, I just read that post over on Digital Dads and I’m leaving a comment here because, well, the comment section here seems a bit less competitive.

You know, growing up, I wasn’t handed anything on a platter, but I also didn’t want for much. I was raised to appreciated the value of a dollar and hard day’s work.

But one thing I’ve had to get over is the that a lot of things you just have to do yourself. You see, my Dad worked often, so even though I was imbued with the importance of a work ethic, I kinda lacked any contact with how to apply it. I didn’t realize for years just how much of a hustle there was involved with busting your ass.

Anyways, now that I’m a Dad, that’s one thing I definitely want to make sure I teach my son. Not only that he can do anything, but that if he wants something, he better go out there and get it himself because no matter how much he proves himself to others, they aren’t going to give him shit ’cause meritocracy goes only so far.

So yeah, I too am trying to raise a gate jumper. I’m just hoping that I can teach him to always remain a bit of a mustang.

    CC,

Just listened to your podcast on this topic after returning from my trip back “home” in Boston. You are absolutely right in that most of our obstacles are of our own making. Yes, life can deal you a tough hand, but we each need to play it to the best of our abilities. This theme runs through some of my blogs and my books as well. It’s my passion and what drives me, helping others find the a-ha within.

I always love your podcasts that are spontaneous and passion filled. There’s something about the Massachusetts, the air or revolution and the happy discontentment that helps move people forward!

couldn’t agree more with this post. Give me a young person who made their way in life over the kid who got everything any day. The most important thing we can teach our kids is how to think c ritically (so they can solve problems) and how to believe in themselves when no one else does.
