My First Kayak

posted on June 12, 2010

I love doing anything outdoors. One of my favorite things is to spend the day in a canoe paddling by nature and loving every minute of it.

So, the idea of getting a kayak is both awesome and confusing to me.

You have to understand that when it comes to the world of paddling there are canoe people and there are kayak people. Sort of like dogs vs. cats or Nikon vs. Canon. Having always been a canoe guy, it felt very weird walking into L.L. Bean and buying my first kayak.

I was determined to get it into the water as soon as possible and I brought along my camera to capture the moment.

Many people have asked me which kayak I bought and the model I purchased was the Pungo 140 GEN2 Kayak by Wilderness Systems®. So far I love it and I can’t wait to take it out a bunch more.

    Brilliant.
I'm rarely, if ever, jealous when I read/see a blog post even it it's about something fantastic/expensive.
But, boy, I was so jealous thinking about gliding over the water and imaging the sounds & sensations.
    Thanks for sharing.

Cool video… what a beautiful day, and I'm jealous that you're so close to the water and can just pop over for a quick paddle whenever you have a few moments! :)

Hi C.C. – Back in 2007 I took my Sanyo Xacti camera and strapped it to my kayak and videoed the experience. You can check it out here http://www.benspark.com/podcast-wired-kayaker-p… and since then I've participated in many on the water activities. I got a waterproof camera and continued doing the kayak video thing. Now I have an Xshot Kayak mount (if you are going to do more videos on the water you need one) and got some Kodak PlaySport Cameras from Kodak for a special kayak trip happening in July called the Roger Williams Paddle. You might enjoy going to that trip, it is full of history and you get to go right into the heart of Providence. This is my video of that experience – http://www.benspark.com/the-wired-kayaker-roger…. Drop me and e-mail and I can get you more details on the trip.
