Why Do You Follow?

posted on July 29, 2011

Ever since Google+ launched I’ve watched the number of people adding me to circles going up every day. I have no idea how many people it is in total, but every day there are more and most of them that are complete strangers to me.

So I threw a line out in the water to see if anyone would bite with this question:

Of course, I was happy to see the answers instantly come pouring in and the best part was that almost all of them were from people I did not know. Guess my friends didn’t feel like answering since they hoped the answer was obvious? *grin*

While there was a variety of reasons mentioned, there were definitely a few buckets of people. First were the fans of Content Rules, Managing the Gray, Digital Dads and other content I’ve created over the years. Then there were the people that have seen what I post reshared by others, so they followed to see what else I might post. A whole bunch simply said “because I like following you on Twitter.” Finally, there were those that look to me as an expert in the online marketing and social media and want to learn from what I share.

What I was most happy about though was the one answer that came up over and over and is what I’ve been preaching from stage for years and to every client I have worked with and that is:

“Because you share interesting things…”

Want to build a following? Want people to pay attention to what you are doing online? Then don’t use the megaphone to only shill for yourself and instead share great stuff that other people will find interesting.

Yes, it is THAT simple.

When I first started using Google+ most of my circles revolved around my other social media profile connections. I had a solid list of people I knew via Twitter and then a different set that came from FB and Gmail contacts. I have noticed over the last week I am starting to be circled by people I have never been in contact with. It is an interesting trend to watch as Google_ grows.

See I took a very different approach and only circled those really close to me or that were sharing such great content that I didn’t want to miss it. Still think I have around 200 people I’ve circled.

But, it is fun to just dip into the big stream and see what everyone else is sharing from time to time as well.

most of the folks in my “all peeps” circle are total strangers – I am syncing my work address book with my gmail contact list …. many contacts are suppliers, clients and former colleagues – for some reason, gmail contacts are pulled into G+ … when I initially “optimized” my circles with only the people I want to be connected to socially – I inadvertently deleted 95% of my business critical contacts through “back-syncing” from G+ to gmail contacts to my work address book …

Now THAT is a different way to use G+

      Is it working for you?

CC – saw your “stealth” presentation at Wordcamp Boston 2011. I think the stodgy title (“Video Presentation”)kept a few people away.  Their loss. It should have been called “Engaging Your C@justinfreid:disqus stomers Through Laughter – or – How Cisco Beat Viagra at its Own Game”
I drank the Kool-aid and ordered the book.  Check out my review of Wordcamp Boston 2011 where you are featured!

      Thank you very much.

It wasn’t so much “stealth” as a last second change of plans and they asked me to jump on stage. *grin*Do you have a link to the review? I’d love to read it.

I noticed a flood of total strangers adding me to their circles as well; if you are sharing to Public or Extended Circles (meaning your circles and your circles’ circles), you’ll get a lot of these.

Which I certainly am and I have no problem with all the people, I was just curious.

Well said, C.C. I agree that it’s simple. However, simple is not always easy. I know I’m preaching to the choir here, but you do way more than “share interesting things.” In fact, you pretty much do everything you and Ann talk about in Content Rules.

    Keep sharing awesome.

Thank you man. Always makes smile to hear things like that.

Yes, I made it OVERLY simple to make a point, but you are right that it isn’t all magic and unicorns. It is a lot of hard work.
