I totally agree. Now what if NBC spent more time on the pre game coverage, 6 hours on personal profiles of people/events associated with the NFL or NBC for that matter, who have made a big difference in peoples lives. Their profile on Steve Gleason & The Indianapolis legacy were great and are examples.

Hard not to agree, although I don't particularly enjoy the Super Bowl (haven't watched a whole game in a while). But what you're speaking to is much larger than just the Super Bowl. Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent every day to market products, and while the Super Bowl may be the high holy day of wasteful ad spending, think of the amazing things we could accomplish as a society if we put even 1/10th of that money back into areas in our communities that need it?

That of course would put some of us out of a job, and therein lies the problem. Can the profit motive ever be supplanted by a more human one?

The Superbowl looks like a sporting event, but it is a corporate event. Even the ticket distribution is managed in such a way that only about 17.5% of the total tickets are ever directly available to fans- the rest go through teams, corporate sponsors, etc. Winning teams get a percentage, all the other teams get a certain allocation, the Host committee, etc.

This is my problem with the Super Bowl in general. It just seems all that money spent- even if it does go, in part to employing workers for a short period of time, etc. seems like it's a band aid where the same amount of money could be spent for longer term, infrastructure good. I feel the same way about the ridiculous amount of money being spent on the political campaign- what if instead of paying $14.5 million in ads, the Romney campaign gave that money to schools in Florida?

That would be something to talk about in terms of making a difference on something other than air and disposable paper. It keeps the ad folks and production folks n business, but I think I'd rather see their kids in better schools.

CC, I totally agree with you. I like watching the ads - esp. anything with Clint - but it makes me more than a little sad to think about how that money could be better used for families and kids and individuals in real trouble in America. I feel the same way about election spending.

I think it's too excessive from the commercials to the halftime productions (which aren't always very good - I thought last night was just silly.) All these costs trickle down - either to the consumer, the ticket buyer, or the taxpayer. It's too much. I think most people would just be happy to watch a good game.
