My first R-Rated movie at the same age was "Night Shift," and I saw it alone.

What I learned was that it was completely ok to moonlight by running a brothel out of a city morgue.

It's a lesson I carry with me to this day.

Beautiful post.

As another father told me as my kids neared the teen years; Parenting is like baking a cake. When they are young you put all the ingredients in and mix it up, in the teen years you have to let it bake, then in their twenties (or later) you see how it all came out.

Teens are hard (for me anyway) but if you put good ingredients in, you can trust in what's going to come out the other side.

C.C you are an awesome Dad but more importantly you are a great Father. I do distinguish between the two. Anyone can be a Dad, but it takes self awareness and responsibility to be a Father.
Having two daughters I can only hope that the men they choose to spend their lives with were raised by Fathers not just Dads.
Keep on being both!

Thanks for a great post. As one more step toward Dylan becoming "a man" this is just the beginning of a new bond you'll have as men and not just a father and son. As our kids get older the role of dad as mentor and not just parent is an amazing one, and now that my own kids are in their 20's, one I am just beginning to truly appreciate. And you'll find ways to have that same "adult" bond with Emily too. As you say, and it is a GREAT quote, worth repeating and remembering:

"Fatherhood isn’t something you can do once and forget. It is a constant and ongoing path that once you are on, you never get to leave."
