Ice Cream & College Savings: The WGBH FunFest

The air was filed with a mixture of sun tan lotion & cotton candy, and everywhere you looked there were strollers and sun hats. The groovy sounds of a man singing about what it felt like to be a frog filled our ears as we passed in our tickets and headed in to the event. I wish we had known about this event when our kids were younger. Seeing Curious George walk by and then bumping into Clifford the Big Red Dog made me smile.

This year I’ve partnered with Fidelity & MEFA in support of the 2015 U.Fund Dreams Tour. Part of the agreement is that I’ll be attending a few events on the tour, and sharing the experiences with my readers.

Amongst all the free ice cream, face painting and live music, there was an interactive tent where both kids and parents could learn about college saving.

As you can see, it was a fun place to visit.

While the kids could slingshot sheep over the moon, parents could learn how much they needed to save, and how easy it can be to save for their children’s education.

We chatted a bit with a super friendly Fidelity representative about our 529 plans that we set up years ago and the concerns we have over the rising costs of college. He answered all of our questions, and let us know how we could get more answers anytime in the future.

I liked that they made the tent so playful and welcoming. Kids wanted to come in and see what was going on, and at the same time their parents could learn and get their questions answered. That is a winning combination in my mind and not always the easiest to pull off.

Balancing out the heavy topic of college savings with ice cream and sunshine certainly isn’t a bad way to spend some time on a Saturday afternoon.

I encourage you to attend one of the other stops on the U.Fund Dreams Tour in the coming weeks, and definitely consider opening a 529 Plan if you have children.

Happy saving!

Disclosure: I’m working with Fidelity Investments and MEFA to spread the word on the U.Fund Dreams Tour. All opinions are my own.
