Seth Godin Made Me Buy Art Supplies
Seth Godin shaped me as a marketer and continues to serve as a mentor and source of inspiration.
So, when I saw that his daily blog post was titled “How to teach marketing” last week, it of course got my immediate attention.
He was highlighting his points from a great interview he gave to Dr. Diane Hamilton for an article she wrote for Forbes called “What Seth Godin Says Universities Are Getting Wrong About Marketing.”
If you teach marketing, as I do, you need to read this immediately. Thankfully, many of his points are ones I make sure to incorporate into my courses, and they also inspired me to think about how to evolve and improve some of my lessons and assignments.
Almost every semester, I teach our Marketing and Digital Marketing courses. I also teach Consumer Behavior, and when lucky enough to have the time, a storytelling course. When you teach the same topic over and over, it is easy just to roll along, but I always want to breathe fresh life into my classes whenever possible.
I took a look through my Canvas sites and instantly started tweaking my assignments. I also jumped in the car and headed to Michael’s to buy a bunch of markers for one in-class exercise I’m going to do in the first couple of weeks of class.
While I’m trying to enjoy the summer and not think about school quite yet, Seth gave me a creative kick that I can’t complain about. But, I am going to go back to unplugging for a while (or at least try to).
