Pestering Won’t Get You Press

posted on February 27, 2010

Attention all brand managers, marketing agencies and public relation firms who reach out in any way to online influencers like myself.

I hate to break the news to you, but I’ve got the power in this relationship and you have NONE.

I can write about anything I want. I can say whatever I want. No one but myself chooses when and what I write about or how I do it.

As much as you’d like to influence me and my community, at the end of the day unless you are hiring me in some fashion, then you don’t have permission to nag, pester or bug me in any way since this is a one sided relationship and I can dump you at anytime without so much as caring.

Most of you still need a pitching lesson, but today I want you to realize that after the pitch has got my attention and we are moving on that you can’t turn into a nag or it won’t work out.

Recently I was reached out to by an agency about a new television show. They sent me a USB thumb drive with a copy of the show on it. I get a lot of things like this in the mail so I hadn’t had a chance to watch it yet. I got a polite nudge from the agency asking if I planned to write a review and letting me know that the premiere was upcoming so they hoped I could write it before then.

Totally cool and I wrote them back thanking them (since they had never told me about the date so I wasn’t in any hurry to write it until then) and had every plan of watching it this weekend and writing a review and told them so. There is nothing wrong with a polite nudge and in many cases it is needed and in this case was perfect since I didn’t know there was a time table involved.

But, then for the past two days I got not so polite notes from them asking where the review was and why I hadn’t sent them a link yet.

This is where they blew it. This is where they treated me like cattle that owed them something and I politely wrote them back letting them know that because of their nagging I would no longer be posting a review.

I’ve got a lot of things on my plate. I have a full time job, run several websites, produce lots of content and am an active dad. While getting to see something before the rest of the world is cool and I appreciate it. It doesn’t rock my socks so much that I’m going to put up with a lack of good old fashion common courtesies.

I want you to reach out to me. I want to be part of your campaigns and review your products. I would love to have some sort of professional or casual relationship with you and your brand(s). But, you can’t abandon straight up good manners if you want that too. Pestering will not get you any coverage from me now or in the future. Be polite please?

Couldn't agree with you more. Although I don't get treated like this hardly at all I can understand how it must feel. I think people often fail to remember that there are people behind the avatar/email address that still have feelings and don't like being mistreated or pushed around.

This is certainly not the norm at all which is why when it happened I was a bit speechless.

Thankfully JUST as I was finishing writing this post the cookies gift you sent me arrived. Talk about amazing timing!

So now after that rant you can relax and fill your belly with delicious cookies! =)

    Great post.

I get the same thing when someone asks me to be on their teleseminar, or they post about me and then TELL me to promote it. Come on now.

It's not my privilege to promote your product, it's yours

    THANK YOU for this point.
There has been a wave of bloggers touching on their blogging jealousy and advertiser envy. I'm glad to see someone wear the pants and do what they want.
Forget advertisers, if they can't figure out that you have a) a life and b) an opinion that may not match their own…. Nuts to them.
Write for yourself, in your own time.

Oh I could do another whole rant on the whole jealousy topic as I've seen that everywhere as well and just don't get it.

      *highfive* right back at ya

Nicely said, my friend. The parallel in my world is the vendor who cold calls wanting to sell me the next big IT solution and then becomes angry with me because I don't need it/want it. Desperation drives people to do the dumbest things… :-)

    Hey CC,
The best way to get me to blog about your product is to have a great product.

Do not require me to blog about it.

I reviewed a lot of video products for my book, Get Seen. Some of them didn't make it into the book because they were too hard to use.

Some products are so cool that I continue to use them and demonstrate them in presentations and seminars. It's not because a marketing person pestered me to review the product, it's because it's a very cool product.

In fact, in some cases, I have to track down the PR people to let them know how much I like their product and where I've shown it.

I also received some cookies from melissa leon but haven't opened them up yet, so there are no photos or posts about them, but I think her Twit Gift site is very cool.

As always you are dead on Steve.

It is amazing how many products, shows, services, etc that I love because well…they are good! I talk about them because they evoke a reaction from me and I want to tell others about it.

I'm teaching a class this semester and that is what I keep telling the students. This isn't about the tools or having a cool website. It is about hitting an emotion with the people you want to influence. If you don't, you are dead.

Wow! I admire your candid approach. I think it's important to not only remind those who want to promote their brands, but also folks like me in the trenches who are asking brand managers to work with us.

    I appreciate the reminder!

    All the best, Julia
