Use Tools How They Work Best For YOU

posted on July 18, 2011

With everyone talking about Google Plus combined with the fact that I don’t yet have air conditioning in my office, I found myself in a bit of a mood to rant about the latest social craze and made this little video I called “Google Plus is a Hammer.”

I’m loving Google+ and finding a TON of usefulness from it. I also think that businesses of all sizes should pay attention to it and there is a lot of cool experimentation that can be done right now since it IS the early days.

To all the other early adopters out there playing with it and checking it out, I hope my little bit of advice helps. Looking for some more detailed advice? I know there is a webinar from Chris Brogan to help with that and I’m sure there will be others as well.

Good read? Share with others!

Just caught my total messing up of the saying at the beginning of this video.

    I can’t stop laughing! Whoops!!!

CC, the point you are missing is this (and I am kind of disappointed you do, because I expect you to understand exactly that point):

Most people don’t even know what a circle is. How to use them. As long as we experts tell them ‘just do …’ it is like you would tell me to ‘just taste the food and add what is necessary, like salt’. I can’t cook. For the live of me. I need somebody to tell me how to do it and exactly what not to do. Case in point, delivery service is a better cooking for me.

Now can I make it happen`? Yes, if I spend gazillion on times on this. Instead I might opt in to ‘just’ get a seminar where somebody with experience tells me how to use it – until I am comfortable enough to do it on m own.

I am just in the middle of writing such a seminar with two clear results in my mind: My  friends will laugh at me doing it – similar to your video here – and the rest will be happy  because it will mean they will not have to do the work but just need to listen to me to learn it. We – and I plus one you in this specifically because I thought you already where there – do not need to tell them ‘it is a hammer and you can build stuff’. You need to show them what the hammer looks like and what the concept of the hammer is.  We need to drill it into them like learning multiplying single digits until they are finally able to do so on their own.

This  is what people are looking for. The 001. Not even the 101 – the 001. :)

And Nicole, I’m disappointed that you think I made this video for the
majority of people out there because I’m not.

How you and I use any social network is VERY different than the average
person. I love watching how my wife or neighbors use something like Twitter
or Facebook because it is completely different. They have figured out how it
works for them and are moving forward using it that way. That is the RIGHT
way to use anything and no one is going to tell them different.

What I was advocating for in this is to encourage people to at least play
with it for a bit before they start asking how to do it better. It is so
early right now that we are each figuring it out for ourselves and yes we
should share what we learn and that is why I shared my starting small
concept because that is what worked for me. It won’t work for everyone else,
but it might help some so that is why I shared.

I wasn’t looking for and don’t want to write a “how to use Google+” anything
right now. I could, but I’m focusing on other things and other people are
doing a good job of doing that so I don’t need to add to the clutter and
would rather link to those other people so that anyone looking for more
      detailed guidance can find it.

I shared this because it is what I wanted to share.

I enjoy the rant here pal. The biggest thing that bothers me about it is that everyone wants to be first to say that they figured it out for business and how to make money off it. Like you said, the tool is three weeks old and Google is asking businesses to hang back for now. Let everyone figure it out and them figure out the bugs before getting panties up in a knot.

It’s so early– way too early. Have fun experimenting until it matters. I would argue even that it’s way too early even for Chris’ webinar– business pages aren’t even live yet, and + is still in private beta

Part of me agrees that it is too early, but you know what?

If people are willing to pay him to share what he knows already then good
for him! People will always pay to learn and Chris seems to be tapping in
that so all the more power to him. Wish I had thought of it. :)
