UnMarketing = A MUST Read Business Book

In full disclosure Scott Stratten is a friend of mine. His new book UnMarketing: Stop Marketing. Start Engaging. is now on bookstore shelves across the world and it was put there by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. who is also my publisher for Content Rules. I wasn't sent a copy of the book (guess Scott and I are not THAT good of friends *grin*), but instead bought a copy with my good old hard earned cash. I read a lot of books. I have stacks of them both in my office and on my iPad just waiting to be read , reviewed and shared with all of you fine folks. But, the honest truth is that I don't make as much time for reading as I should. But, last week when UnMarketing showed up on my doorstep, I decided to take the afternoon off and read it. Good choice Chapman!

As I read the book, I found myself laughing out loud. So much so my daughter actually came in to the room to see what I was up to since I was nearly in pain from the laughter. Our conversation went a little something like this:

"Daddy, you don't usually laugh this much when you read books."

"That's because most of them are not that funny."

UnMarketing is the book I'm going to shove into everyone's hands who tells me they don't get social media. I'm going to give it as a present to every executive that tells me that if they get enough followers and friends online that it will save the company. Finally, I'm going to use it to smack every social media expert/guru/wanna-be-rockstar that touts all their accomplishments, yet never really does anything.

Scott has a very blunt writing style that may turn some people off, but I know it is from the heart and he means everything he says. He has done the work and put in the time so he speaks with a voice of authority. The examples he gives are ones that he has gone through and taken the time to analyze to help you understand the online space better than you did yesterday.

My personal favorite part of the book are the footnotes. I bet that is the first time you've ever heard someone say that about a book! You'll have to buy a copy to fully appreciate how awesome they are. It was them that made me laugh out loud on more than one occasion and for those who have read it, yes I did should out YEAH! at the appropriate moment.

This is the book that takes every snarky comment you've wanted to say to your boss and says it for you.

It is much more than a social media 101 book, but could serve that purpose very easily. It is a quick read, that will give you plenty to think about and plenty to push forward with at your company, agency or next project.

To sum it up, I loved the book. It is being added to my very short list of must read books for anyone looking to understand this space. Pick up a copy today. You won't be disappointed. At least I wasn't.
